You will no doubt be aware that the previous (coalition) Government appointed a review panel to look into a new set of professional standards for teaching assistants. The current Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, has decided not to publish these standards.
You may also be aware that since 2003 the standards for the award of Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status have been successfully used as the basis for external assessment of over 50,000 HLTAs. This total includes more than 5,500 HLTAs who have been assessed by the HLTA National Assessment Partnership (HNAP) since TDA funding ceased in 2012. The full list of HLTA standards can be viewed on the HNAP website or within the HNAP provider and candidate handbook.
At Best Practice Network, we have produced an update titled HLTA Status and the HLTA Standards: what schools need to know to support schools in their decision making about how best to integrate professional standards into ongoing CPD for Teaching Assistants. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions and/or suggestions.
We are available to support teaching assistant development and CPD at all levels:
